✗ Your Anxiety Is Lying To You

Anxiety- Let’s Chat About It

Friend, your anxiety is lying to you. You are loved and you are going to be okay. You are enough. You are loved. Do not have to let your anxiety control your life. 

We all experience anxiety differently. Just because you feel anxious about something does not mean you have an Anxiety Disorder. Even if you do not have an Anxiety Disorder does not mean that your anxiety is not affecting your life. 

Some facts about anxiety from The National Institute of Mental Health:

1. There are 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population every year.

2. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S

3. Only 36.9% of those suffering from anxiety receive treatment.

4. Anxiety is a treatable disorder.

5. Anxiety disorders develop from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events.

There are many different types of anxiety. The most common one that I see is Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). 

According to the DSM-5, “GAD is excessive anxiety and worry occurring more days than not for at least six months, about several events or activates (such as work or school performance)”. 

Symptoms of Anxiety:

This is not a comprehensive list of Anxiety symptoms. Everyone experiences anxiety differently.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health and The DMS-5, the following are symptoms of anxiety:

● Hyperactivity 

● Trouble sleeping

● Feeling tired all the time (Fatigue)

● Feeling restless or on-edge

● Having a hard time concentrating

● Irritability

● Difficulty controlling feelings of worry 

It was once said to me that worrying about the future causes anxiety and regretting something in the past that you cannot change causes depression. Now, this is a very simplest view but it is a good reminder that we need to live in the present, not in the past, and not in the future.

My Suggestions: 

1. Slow down, you cannot out busy your anxiety. In other words, you need to slow down and get honest with your feelings and yourself.

2. Get honest with yourself; what are you worried about. Start looking deeper into your feelings. Anxiety is a blanket emotion, this means that more emotions are going on than you realize. For instance, you could be sad, confused, or overwhelmed. 

3. Stop trying to control everything. I am sorry to break this to your friend but it does not matter how well you organize your life, you cannot stop hurtful things from happening. 

4. Develop coping skills; it is important to know how to manage your anxiety and the tools that will help you. 

5. Get some rest; sleep in very important when you are trying to decrees your anxiety. 

6. Be kinder to yourself, you do not have to have life figured out today. You do not have to be perfect. 

7. Ask for help; find a therapist you like to work with. Everyone needs someone to talk to when they are having a hard time. A therapist is there to listen without judgment. They will also help you come up with a plan to manage your anxiety. 

My suggestions for you may seem simple. But they are harder than they sound. So please do not be discouraged if you do not notice a change right away. 

Hey Anxiety! Shove Off!

Think of anxiety-like a bully, they do not want you to be happy because then what would they do? By decreasing your worry and anxiety you will be able to live a happier life. 

It is ok to experience a small amount of worry and anxiety; it is not ok when it takes over your life. Don’t let anxiety have the power in your life friend, take that power back.

Try a suggestion listed above for two weeks. It takes time to create a new habit so if you like the suggestions you picked stick to them and than think about adding on some more.
