Have You Ever Heard Yourself Say “That Must Be Nice”?

The other day my husband said to me, “they are a “must be nicer” do not let them bring you down”. At first I did not get what he was referring to.  But, now that he has brought it to my attention I understand what he was getting at and I would like to share it with you.

What is does it mean to be a “must be nicer”?

A “must be nicer” is someone who is envious or upset that someone else is doing something good for himself or herself.  They may have started their own business, are successful at their job, or obtained a degree. The “must be nicer” is upset that they are not the person that has done something to better themselves.

We have all been a “must be nicer” at some point in our lives. It seems to really come out when we feel pressured to do something with our lives that has been marked as important by society or our families.

I am going to drop a truth bomb on you, ready?  I apologize if it stings a little, you will survive –  I promise.

If you are finding yourself saying, “that must be nice” (in a sarcastic or negative way) once your family member, friend, loved one, or co-worker has told you something they are proud of, you need to check yourself. Not only are you making them feel bad for something they are proud of to make yourself feel better.  But you are also sublimely telling yourself that you will never be able to do what they did. How is that helping anyone? The truth – is it’s not!

My Suggestion:

The next time you start to notice that you are becoming envious of someone that is telling you about an accomplishment check yourself. Go to the bathroom/ or somewhere you can be alone and have a chat with your negative side.

Really ask yourself:

Why are you not happy with them?

Do you feel like you need to make them feel bad to make yourself feel better?

Why do you think you cannot do what they have accomplished?

Do you want to do what they did?

After you have had a nice chat with yourself and you are not going to destroy their happiness. You can go back and continue your chat. I would like to suggest that if you are not able to shut that negative feeling down, excuse yourself for the night because you need to do some more work and have a more serious chat with yourself.

⇢ Friend, you are able to accomplish anything you put your mind to. You do not need to make others feel small to make yourself feel better. You are smart, driven, and capable of doing whatever you put your mind to.

※ Your Challenge:

Take time reflect on how you feel about other peoples happiness. Ask your self the questions listed in this post. Why do you think you can not do what they are doing?
